Scar Therapy - Initial Consultation
Gentle, consent-led scar work to support comfort, movement and body awareness
Service Description
What scar therapy is A calm, hands-on session focused on the tissues in and around surgical/treatment scars (recent or long-standing). Using light, paced techniques, such as scar massage, gentle mobilisations and breath-aware work, we explore ease, softening and glide in the area, always at your pace. This approach is informed by Restore Scar Therapy education. Who it’s for People after cancer-related surgery and/or radiotherapy, abdominal or breast surgery, C-section or hysterectomy scars, and older scars where comfort or movement feels limited. (We individualise, two people with the “same” surgery often need different things.) What to expect in scar therapy treatment • Quiet, unrushed assessment of history, goals and how the scar feels/moves (standing and on the couch), followed by gentle, clearly explained touch. • Techniques are adapted in pressure and speed to mobilise/remodel, decongest, calm, reconnect and stimulate as appropriate, never to “push through.” • You choose the pace and may pause/stop at any time. Safety & suitability (important) • We don’t treat over open, weeping or infected wounds; not during radiotherapy; and we work with extra care in early healing and after complex procedures. As a general guide, many clients start direct scar work from ~8 weeks post-surgery once scabs are gone and skin tolerates touch, and at least two weeks after radiotherapy for the treated area, always guided by your clinical context and any medical advice. We adapt for Clients with stable/managed lymphoedema. • If anything feels too strong, we step back and adapt. Your initial 1 hour session is mainly on taking your surgical/scar histories, assessing the scars, and discussing achievable plans with your own concerns and priorities. Up to 15 minutes hands on treatment is expected, and we will talk about the self-care recommendations too. Older scars welcome. If you’re unsure whether it’s the right time to start, message me and we’ll decide together. Treatments are delivered by a therapist trained with Restore Scar Therapy, a UK leader in evidence-informed scar therapy education.
